Carbon Sequestration Tenure
The Government of Alberta has undertaken a competitive process to allocate carbon sequestration pore space to enable the development of carbon sequestration hubs across the province. A series of Request for Full Project Proposals facilitated the awarding of a Carbon Sequestration Evaluation Agreement (CSEA) to successful proponents who will undertake activities to evaluate the suitability of the area for carbon sequestration. Upon completing the evaluation, Alberta Energy and Minerals invites applications from the CSEA holders to apply for a Carbon Sequestration Agreement (CSA). Applicants that the meet the Department’s requirements will be granted the CSA that will outline the rights, responsibilities, and requirements of an agreement holder to abide by while operating a carbon sequestration hub.
In addition, Alberta Energy and Minerals is accepting applications for carbon sequestration tenure for small scale and remote projects where it can be demonstrated that a carbon sequestration hub will not address needs. Proponents will be asked to provide information on the proposed activity and area of interest and will also be required to identify and address overlapping interests and activities in the location. Ultimately, this process will facilitate the granting of two agreements:
